TIL a repair tech in Phoenix taught me to reflow solder joints with a $12 hot plate instead of my $300 station
Last Tuesday I was stuck on a Nikon F3 with a dead meter and a tech at a shop in Phoenix told me to pull the board and warm the whole thing on a cheap hot plate I got for $12 at a thrift store. I tried it on three junk boards first and every single cold joint I had chased with an iron for two hours just reflowed clean in about 90 seconds. Anybody else using a griddle or hot plate for this, and what temp do you set it at so you don't cook the plastic connectors?

I've cooked more plastic connectors than cold joints trying this, my griddle has a permanent battle scar from a Motorola board. 240F on the dial is my sweet spot but I'm sure someone with real skills will correct me.
