My camping gear list went from 42 lbs to 19 lbs in 2 years, and the scale at the trailhead is what did it
Two years back I was hauling a 42 lb pack on a 6 mile loop in the Ozarks and my knees were screaming by mile 3. I swore my gear was fine, but a guy at the trailhead had a cheap luggage scale hanging off his tailgate and offered to weigh packs for fun. Mine came in at 42 lbs with water. His was 19. Same trip, same weather, same 3 days out. That number bugged me for months. So I started weighing every single item in a spreadsheet, and the dumb stuff added up fast. My tent alone was 7 lbs, my stove kit was 2.5 lbs, and I was carrying a hatchet I used one time in 4 trips. After 2 years of swapping things out and leaving stuff home, my base weight dropped from 28 lbs to 11. The scale did more for me than any review ever did. Now I weigh everything before it goes in the bag. What was the single heaviest thing you ditched and never missed?
