Storing my sleeping bag compressed ruined the insulation
It never lofted properly again after months in the stuff sack. Now I only keep it in a loose cotton bag at home.

You say it never lofted right again... but that sounds pretty final. I've stuffed my bag for months and it still puffs up ok. Maybe it was just old or needed airing out. Compression might not be the big bad wolf everyone makes it out to be. Still, using a cotton bag is smart for long storage.

How long have you been using that same sleeping bag? I kept mine stuffed for a whole season once and it never bounced back fully. The down or synthetic fill gets crushed and loses its ability to trap air. Stuffing it loose in a big bin or hanging it up is way better for long term. Cotton bags help but only if they're roomy enough to let the bag expand. If your bag still puffs up, you might have gotten lucky or it's newer tech.

Funny how many people treat gear like it's disposable then get upset when it wears out. This reminds me of folks who leave tools in the rain or never change their car's oil, then act shocked when things fail. There's a basic lack of respect for how stuff actually works, like expecting magic instead of materials science. You see it everywhere, not just with camping gear. Why do we ignore the simple rules for keeping things in good shape?
