That $40 tarp I bought at Walmart tore on the second night of a week-long trip
Last month I drove up to the Smoky Mountains for a 5 day solo camping trip. On day one I set up my cheap blue tarp as a rain fly over my tent, seemed fine. By night two a storm hit and the wind ripped a 6 inch tear right through the corner grommet. I had to pack up early and drive home in the rain. Anyone else had bad luck with budget tarps or is there a decent one under $50 that actually holds up?

$40 tarp tore on the second night" - man I feel that. I bought the same kind of blue tarp for a weekend trip and mine ripped before I even got it out of the package. Guess I'll keep using my old ratty one with duct tape patches until I find something that lasts longer than a few hours of light rain.

Wait, it ripped just opening the package? That's rough. I've had those blue tarps let me down too, they're just not built to last anymore.

Nah, @harpercampbell, I actually think those blue tarps get a worse rap than they deserve. Sure, the cheap ones won't survive a mountain storm, but if you set it up right with some rope tension and avoid the grommets for tie-downs, they last way longer. My same $20 tarp has been through like 8 trips and still going, so maybe give yours another shot before giving up.
