Why does nobody talk about how rainfly seam tape fails after 2 seasons?
Three years ago I bought a mid-range 3-season tent and last month during a trip near Bend, Oregon, the rainfly started leaking right along the taped seams. I checked it back home and the tape was peeling off in 4 spots, which is crazy for a tent that maybe saw 15 nights of use total. Everyone reviews tents after one weekend in perfect weather, nobody tests the seam tape after two years of sun exposure and folding. My $200 tent is basically useless now unless I seam seal it myself, which I never had to do with my old cheap tent that lasted 8 years. Has anyone actually found a rainfly that holds up past 3 seasons without the tape going bad, or is this just how they make them now?
Did you store it folded up tight in a hot garage or car? That's usually what kills seam tape faster than actual use does. Sun and heat break down the glue way quicker than rain ever will.
