Saw a guy at the Target in Reno with 3 of his own books on the shelf, signed and everything
I was killing time in the book aisle at the Target on S Virginia St in Reno about 2 weeks ago and noticed a stack of a memoir by some fitness guy who got dragged online back in 2021. There were 3 copies left and they all had signed bookplates stuck in them, which felt odd for a Target shelf. Is this the new way canceled folks sneak back in, like they skip the podcast tour and just quietly land a retail deal?
Why would a publisher even bother with signed copies for a guy who got dragged online? Here is the thing nobody is talking about. Target does not just randomly stock books with signed bookplates. Bookplates are usually for indie stores or direct sales, not big box shelves. So either the store got a special batch from the publisher, or somebody local walked in and stuck those plates in themselves to make it look like a real signing. That second one seems way more likely. A quiet retail deal makes sense for someone trying to test the waters again, but three signed copies sitting there feels more like a stunt than a comeback plan.
