Shoutout to the 2019 YouTube apology video that made me stop caring about cancel culture
I used to keep a mental list of who was dead to me, but then my roommate in Chicago played Shane Dawson's comeback clip for me in 2021 and I realized I couldn't even remember why I was mad. Now I just ask if the person actually hurt someone or if we all just got bored, so how do you guys decide when to let someone back in?
Two years is nothing when someone built a career off making fun of victims and doing blackface, and a 10 minute video with a sad ukulele doesn't undo that. Logging off for a bit and coming back with better editing isn't the same as actually changing or making things right with the people you hurt. The boredom thing cuts the other way too, we get bored of holding people accountable way faster than they get bored of cashing checks. If you can't even remember why you were mad, that sounds less like growth and more like you just forgot, which isn't the same thing.
