A temp agency recruiter told me my resume was 'too honest' and I still think about it
Back in 2018 I was job hunting in Phoenix and a recruiter named Dana pulled me aside after a screening call. She said my resume listed a job I quit after 3 weeks because the boss screamed at me daily. She told me to just put the dates and not explain why, that interviews are for that story. It felt like lying at first, but she was right about getting my foot in the door. Has anyone else gotten weird advice from a recruiter that actually worked out or backfired?

i mean, i get where dana was coming from but i think that kind of advice is exactly why people hate the job hunt so much. like, sure, hiding the screaming boss story gets you in the door, but then you sit in an interview and they ask why you left and you either have to lie or word-vomit the truth anyway. maybe it's just me, but i'd rather have a resume that's an honest starting point and let the interview fill in the gaps. i had a friend do the opposite once, put "saw a raccoon in the office fridge" on her resume and got a call back just because the hiring manager wanted to hear the story. i think people are more forgiving of honesty than recruiters give them credit for.
