DAE think the best career advice comes from people who never got promoted?
Last spring I was at a backyard cookout in Tulsa and an old neighbor named Dale, who spent 22 years at the same water department, told me to stop chasing titles and start chasing bosses. He said he turned down a supervisor role twice because the guy above him took credit for everything. At the time I thought he was just coasting, but six months later I watched a friend take a promotion and get stuck cleaning up the last manager's mess. How many people here have turned down a title on purpose, and did it help or hurt you later?
