Hit 500 job applications before my first real interview invite

I kept a spreadsheet from day one of my job search, just out of curiosity. After 3 months I had sent out 500 applications across construction management, warehouse supervisor, and even some office assistant gigs. The number that surprised me was how many of those were just auto-rejections or ghost listings. I only got 4 callbacks total, and the one that turned into an actual interview came from a place that I applied to at 2 AM on a Tuesday. They said my cover letter mentioned a specific tool they used, a forklift model I had experience with. That one detail made me realize how much of the process is just random chance and timing. Anyone else track their numbers and find a weird pattern like that?

Yo did you see that other thread where a guy tracked his apps and found out like half of them were posted just to collect resumes for "future openings" but never actually filled? I got a buddy who went through something similar, he spent 4 months applying everywhere then finally got a callback from a company he applied to at 3am after a late shift. The hiring manager told him his resume was picked because he used the exact phrase "inventory cycle counting" that matched their job description word for word. He said the whole thing felt like a lottery ticket moment, not skill based at all. Its wild how much of this is just dumb luck and showing up at the right time.

@anthony763 that reminds me of this thing my cousin went through years back. He was in IT and kept applying for a server admin job at this big bank, but they kept saying no. Then one day he just showed up to the building by accident, got lost in the parking garage, and ran into the hiring manager who was having car trouble. He helped jump start his car, they got to talking, and the manager hired him on the spot two weeks later without even posting the job. The whole system is a mess and half the time it feels like the universe just has to line up right for you to get anywhere.

OH MY GOD yes to all of this! I had a VERY similar thing happen where I tracked 400 apps over 4 months and got one interview from a company that I applied to at like midnight after a bad day. The hiring manager straight up told me my resume got pulled because I capitalized "Forklift Certified" EXACTLY like it was in their job description, which was total fluke because I was just copying the format from my last job. It is honestly ridiculous how much of it is just timing and dumb luck, like the whole system is designed to make you feel crazy until one random thing clicks.
