Old boss told me to stop answering emails after 8pm and it took 6 months for me to get why
I grabbed coffee with my old manager from a warehouse job in Toledo about 6 months ago. He said he used to answer client emails at 10pm until his own boss asked him one question: who is training the client to expect that? So he started scheduling emails for 7am and nobody ever complained. I finally tried it and a guy I work with asked why I went quiet at night, which honestly felt great. Has anyone else tested this out, or does it backfire in your line of work?
My manager at a Ford plant in Michigan pulled the same thing on me back in 2019 and I fought him on it at first. I figured clients would think I was slacking if I didn't reply at night, but once I switched to scheduling sends for the morning, the only thing that changed was people stopped panicking over stuff that could wait. So yeah, it took me a while to come around, but the whole thing is just about what you train people to expect.
