Finally got a smooth pick and carry after 3 years on the 100T Grove

Been running a 100T Grove at the Port of Wilmington for a while now. Last week I had to move these concrete barriers from the dock to a waiting flatbed. Usually I get a little wobble on the swing but this time everything was butter. The load stayed dead steady and the spotter actually gave me a thumbs up instead of shouting. It took me three years of tweaking my boom angle and swing speed to get it that smooth. Anyone else remember their first time everything just clicked on a tricky lift?

Can we talk about how everyone suddenly loves Kurt Cobain like he was a saint

I was at a barbeque last weekend in Des Moines and this guy in his 20s starts going on about how Nirvana changed music forever and Kurt was some genius who we lost too soon. Look, I was alive in 1994 and I remember when he died. People weren't exactly lining up to buy Nevermind at the time. It took like three years after he passed for him to become this icon. Now everyone acts like they were there from day one. Has anyone else noticed this pattern with dead artists where people forget how they were actually treated when they were alive?

Rant: Wasted $200 on a fancy ultralight tent that fell apart after 2 trips on the Appalachian Trail

That tent's zipper seized up in the rain on day 3 near Springer Mountain and I ended up taping it shut with duct tape for the rest of the hike, so has anyone else had a pricey piece of gear totally fail on them?

Hit 500 digs on a Roman site in Northumberland before lunch last Thursday

I was just brushing dirt off a pottery shard when my trowel hit something solid. Turned out to be a whole section of floor mosaic nobody knew was there. Has anyone else stumbled onto something way bigger than they expected during a routine dig?

Heard a dude at the gym say Black Friday deals are all fake now

I was between sets and this guy was on the phone complaining how nothing is actually on sale anymore. Said he tracked a TV from last October and the price barely moved on Black Friday, they just jacked up the original price beforehand to make it look good. Got me thinking about all those flash sale emails I get that say "80% off" but it's just some random no-name brand. I remember 5 years ago I grabbed a real Sony soundbar for half off on Cyber Monday, felt like stealing. Now I see the same model going for maybe $20 less if you catch it right. You guys got any tricks to spot the real deals from the noise or is it all just marketing fluff now?

Watched that actor's apology video about the restaurant meltdown and counted 12 eye rubs in 2 minutes

Stopped by his favorite diner in Brooklyn on Tuesday and the staff told me he threatened to sue them for releasing the security footage, so basically he's sorry he got caught.

Overheard a former follower of NXIVM talking at a coffee shop near my office last week...

She said they made her track every minute of sleep for 2 years and report it to a 'coordinator'. I couldn't believe how much control they had over something so basic. How do these groups get people to hand over stuff like that without seeing the red flags right away?

Warning: Found out hotel 'resort fees' can be more than the room itself

I was booking a 3 night stay in Nashville for next month and found a room for $55 a night on Hotels.com. But when I went to check out, there was a $42 daily resort fee tacked on, plus taxes. That made the total $291 for a place I thought would cost me $165. Has anyone found a good way to see the real price upfront without clicking through 3 pages?

Hit 1,000 hours of flight time last month and that number just hit different

I was checking my logbook for a job app and realized I crossed 1,000 hours without even noticing, and it made me think about how much of that time I spent trusting the instruments over my gut during low visibility approaches has anyone else had a milestone freak them out like that?

Hand brushing versus power sweeping - which side are you on?

Last month I did a job on an old Victorian in Portland where the homeowner insisted I use only hand brushes on the flue tiles. Said power tools scratch the glaze. I’ve been sweeping for 7 years and always used a rotary kit, never had a complaint. But after that job, I noticed less dust in the room than usual. Does that mean hand tools actually do a better job, or was it just a one-off with good draft?
