Showerthought: the $180 I spent on a resume writer got me zero interviews, but the free version my sister redid landed the job
About two years ago I was stuck in a dead end retail job here in Columbus and I figured the problem was my resume, so I paid a service $180 to rewrite it for me. What I got back was this fancy document full of phrases like results driven leader, and I sent it out for three months and heard nothing back. Then my sister, who hires people at a bank, took one look and said it read like a robot wrote it. She sat with me for an hour and we cut the whole thing down to one page, plain words, actual numbers like the 22 people I trained and the $40k in shrink I stopped in one year. Within a month I had three callbacks and ended up with the job I still have now. I think I paid for polish when what I needed was someone to just tell me the truth about what hiring people actually want to see. Has anyone else paid for a professional service like this and felt like it made things worse instead of better?
