Shoutout to the county clerk in Des Moines who showed me the error bars

I was digging into that viral claim about Iowa early voting turnout being down 40% and went down to look at the raw precinct data myself. The clerk pointed out the numbers were from a single rural precinct that had a polling location change, not the whole county. Has anyone else had luck getting actual raw data from local offices instead of just believing the headlines?

Had the worst Saturday shift of my life last week and it broke some kind of record for me

So I work at a dive bar downtown, nothing fancy. Last Saturday we had a bachelorette party roll in at like 2pm, which is never a good sign. By 4pm they'd already done 3 rounds of fireball shots and one of them puked on the pool table. Then at 6pm some guy tried to start a tab with a fake ID that had his actual photo but a completely different name on it (like come on dude). By 9pm my well was out of soda water and the ice machine was down. I counted 17 different complaints that night from people mad about prices that haven't changed in 2 years. Left with $43 in tips for 10 hours of work. Has anyone else had a shift where literally everything went wrong at the same time?

Ditched the manual takeoffs after one too many screw-ups

Used to do all my material estimates by hand on printed plans, but after I miscalculated 2,000 square feet of drywall on a job in Portland last spring, I switched to a digital takeoff app. Has anyone else had a close call like that with manual counts?

Old timer told me to stop using spikes on removals near houses

Back in 2005, a guy named Red who'd been climbing since the 70s told me spikes were lazy for takedowns close to houses. I thought he was just old school, but after I gouged a customer's gutter last spring on a big oak, I realized he was right all along. Anyone else learn a hard way that the old guys knew their stuff?

Just realized that apology from that actress last week was pure damage control

You know the one who got caught saying all those nasty things about her co-star in 2019? She posted that 12 minute video crying about how she's 'grown' and 'learned' since then... but I actually worked with her on a commercial shoot in Atlanta back in 2021 and she was exactly the same. Has anyone else noticed how these apologies always come right when they have a new movie coming out?

That Shane Dawson apology video from 2020 still haunts me

I was stuck at home during the pandemic, scrolling through YouTube in my tiny apartment, when his 50 minute video popped up. The guy literally sobbed about old racist skits for an hour, but something about the way he kept glancing at the camera felt off... like he was checking if the tears were landing right. I remember counting 4 times he tried to deflect blame onto his past self, like 'that was 2015 me.' Has anyone else noticed how celebrities started using that 'old version of me' excuse way more after that video?

Worst Tuesday I've had with Mom's insurance since January

Got a letter saying her home health aide visits got denied again because they coded something wrong on the form. I spent 4 hours on the phone with Medicare and still got nowhere. Has anyone else had to deal with these stupid coding errors?

Found a trick to binge-watch old anime without burning out

I was trying to get through the original Mobile Suit Gundam series, 43 episodes from 1979, and around episode 15 I hit a wall hard. The pacing felt super slow compared to modern shows. Then I started watching at 1.25x speed on my laptop, and honestly it was a game changer. The dialogue still sounds natural but the action scenes feel way tighter. I also switched to watching one episode during lunch and one at night instead of cramming three in a row. Now I'm at episode 38 and I actually remember the plot. Has anyone else tried messing with playback speed for older anime?

I finally gave in and bought a laser level after years of using a spirit level

For like 5 years I was dead set against laser levels. Thought they were fancy toys for rich contractors. Then last month I had to hang 12 picture frames in a row at my sister's place in Phoenix and my old bubble level had me redoing every other one. Borrowed her husband's cheap $40 Bosch and got all 12 done in 20 minutes flat. Now I'm wondering what else I've been stubborn about for no good reason. Any other tools you swore off for years that turned out to be worth it?

Old foreman told me to stop using soapstone on stainless and I brushed him off

At the refinery in Baton Rouge about 5 years ago, a 60 year old foreman named Dave told me my soapstone marks would cause corrosion over time. I thought he was just being fussy, but last month I saw a weld joint fail right along a line I had marked. Has anyone else seen this happen with soapstone on stainless?
