Took the morning prep shift over nights, now I actually sleep like a human
After 8 years of closing shifts and getting home at 1am, I switched to the 6am to 2pm slot at the Portland place I work at. I did it because my girlfriend never saw me and I was drinking 4 espressos just to stay awake for brunch service. The first week was brutal, my hands were shaking and I kept burning my fingers on the flat top before caffeine kicked in. But after a month, I notice I actually remember my dreams now and my blood pressure dropped 15 points. The downside is I miss the late night crew energy, nobody talks at 6am except to argue about who left the fish out. Anyone else make the jump and find the tradeoff worth it, or did you go back to nights?

Talked a buddy of mine into that switch at his diner and he swore the first two weeks felt like jet lag every day, but now he says he actually cooks breakfast with his kids before school. He never went back to nights, says the quiet mornings grew on him and the smokers outside at 6am are way less dramatic than the 2am crowd.
