The sign I saw taped inside a staffing office in Columbus that made me walk out
I was dropping off a resume at a temp agency on High Street in Columbus when I saw a sign on the back wall that said "we place 1 in 9 applicants, the rest are just practice", and I walked out because if they're grading you like that before you even sit down, you're the product, not the client, so has anyone else bailed on an agency mid-application after seeing something on the wall?
That line about being "practice" is wild because it basically admits you're not the customer, you're the raw material they run through a filter. A place that puts 1 in 9 on the wall is telling you up front that 8 out of 9 people leave with nothing, and they're fine with that math because the 9th pays the bills. I had a similar thing at a staffing spot near the Dayton mall years ago, they had a whiteboard with names and a column for "sent" and "placed" and the gap between those two numbers was huge, like 40 sent, 3 placed. It hit me that those other 37 people burned a whole day on tests and paperwork for free. So yeah, walking out was the right call, because once they treat the interview like a contest you already lost, every step after that is them squeezing free labor and data out of you. The sign isnt a flex, its a warning label.
