Dropped $85 on a magnetic stud finder and it missed every stud behind my tile shower
I needed to hang a grab bar in my mom's bathroom up in Boise last month and figured a fancy magnetic finder would save me a headache. It kept sticking to the same spots, so I drilled pilot holes in three wrong places and cracked a tile, which set me back about $60 in extra tile and adhesive. The whole thing would have been solved faster by knocking on the wall and checking the shower valve from the other side like an old timer told me after. Has anyone found a finder that actually reads through tile and lath, or am I better off drilling a test hole and patching it?
