Learning to read grain direction saved my trim work in Denver

I kept getting fuzzy edges on my baseboard cuts, no matter how sharp my blade was. Turned out I was planing against the grain on quarter sawn oak, which I didn't even know was a thing until last Tuesday. A guy on a job site told me to check the cathedral lines and run my plane or router the other way. Tested it on some scraps and the difference was night and day, zero tear out on the second pass. Also helped that I dialed my blade depth down to about 1/16th of an inch for the final cut. Anyone else fight with this on figured wood, or do you just stick to prefinished stuff?
