Bought a $95 seam iron off a supply house clearance rack and it ruined 3 seams before I caught on
I was finishing a basement job in Gary last month and my old iron quit on me, so I grabbed a cheaper one off a clearance rack at a supply house because I needed it that day. The temp dial was off by about 40 degrees from what it showed, which I did not figure out until the third seam started peeling apart at the edge two days after I left. I had to go back and redo all three seams on my own time and eat the cost of the extra material, which ran me around $140 on top of the iron. The dial felt fine when I tested it on a scrap piece, but it heats up way different once it sits for a bit. Has anyone found a decent way to check an iron's real temp before trusting it on a paid job?
