Old installer at the supply house in Tulsa laughed at my tack strip pile and asked one question
I was loading up tack strip last Tuesday when a guy who has been stretching carpet since the 80s pointed at my stack and asked if I was measuring rooms or measuring my shortcuts. He said the reason half my restretches come back is I treat tack strip like a numbers game instead of checking the subfloor at every seam, and honestly it stung because he was right. How many of you walk the whole room before you even pull the first strip, or do you trust the measurements and go?
Been there, that old guy knew what he was talking about. Walking the room first saves you more time than it costs, pull up a corner here and there, check for soft spots, staples, old adhesive, whatever the last guy left behind. Measurements only tell you how much material you need, they don't tell you the floor is rotten by the sliding door or there's a hump at the threshold. In my experience the rooms that come back are almost always the ones where I trusted the tape and skipped the walk. Takes ten extra minutes and saves you a whole day on the back end.
