Pro tip: check the tack strip before you pull up what's left of it

Last Tuesday in a rental off 5th Street here in Boise I pulled a stretch of Berber out of a hallway and about two feet of tack strip came up with it, nails and all. I got the shop vac out first and ran a magnet over that area twice before I touched anything else. Once it was clean I tapped a fresh strip down with the stair tool and set the new piece right over the old pad line. Anyone else got a trick for getting the old staples out of the concrete without chipping the edge?
