Took me 6 hours to figure out why my kicker kept popping on a stair nose in a Bloomington rental
Turned out the tack strip was 1/4 inch too far from the riser so the stretch had nowhere to grab, and I only found it after pulling the same 3 steps back up twice, so what's your go to gap on stairs?
Check the nose angle first before you even touch the strip, cause a lot of those Bloomington rentals have risers that aren't plumb and it throws your whole gap off. On a true square riser I run the strip so the pins sit about 3/8 to 1/2 from the riser face, and I set the strip with the pins angled toward the riser so the stretch grabs into the gap instead of fighting it. A stair nose needs more bite than a flat wall anyway because your kicker is pulling up and over, not just sideways. Also hit the nose with a little heat before you stretch it, cold carpet won't lock in and it'll creep back and pop a week later. Six hours on three steps hurts but once you get the pin angle and gap dialed you'll never pull those stairs twice again.
