Walnut Creek showroom changed my mind on tack strips

Stopped by a flooring supply showroom outside Walnut Creek last month just to grab some adhesive, ended up talking to their installer rep for 20 minutes. He showed me a section of carpet where the tack strip was set too far from the wall, and explained how it causes that wavy ripple near the baseboard. I always figured as long as the strip was nailed down within a foot of the wall, you were fine. Then he pulled out a laser guide to prove the strip needs to sit within 3/8 inch of the finished wall line, which I never measured that tight on my jobs. Tried it on a living room install this week, 14 by 18 feet, and the edges laid flat without me having to stretch the carpet twice. Has anyone else been measuring their strip distance or are you all just eyeballing it like I used to?
