My sister in Tampa called me crying over that chef's apology and I realized I watch these totally different now
Back in 2019 I would just watch a celeb apology clip once on my phone and decide right there if they meant it, and I remember defending that one actor to my whole group chat after like 30 seconds. Last Tuesday my sister in Tampa called me about some chef's apology video and instead of reacting I pulled up the transcript, counted 4 times he blamed "the situation" instead of himself, and noticed he never once named the people he hurt. Does anyone else have a little checklist they run through, or do you just go with your gut on the first watch?
The whole "blamed the situation 4 times instead of himself" thing is exactly what I do now and it drives me nuts. My dumbest version of this is that I pause apology videos and rewind to see if the person actually says "I'm sorry" or just "I'm sorry you feel that way" like it's a cheat code. Meanwhile my girlfriend just watches once and says "he seems sorry" and she's probably happier than me. I used to do the 30 second gut call too but now I sit there counting words like I'm grading a book report.
