Spent $300 on a knife sharpening class, my 15 buck whetstone from Amazon does the same job

The instructor swore their $150 Japanese stones and 3 hour technique would change my life, but after 2 months of practice at home in Portland I get the same edge from a $12 combo stone, so is the fancy stuff really worth it or did I just get a bad teacher?
