Heard a landlord in Logan Square say he never returns deposits, and it clicked why my cousin got her $900 back
Was waiting for my coffee on Milwaukee Ave last Tuesday and these two guys next to me were talking about a place one of them just moved out of. The landlord told him flat out that security deposits are "just free money" and he keeps them unless someone complains. My cousin went through this exact thing in Logan Square two years ago and got her full $900 back because she sent a certified letter citing the Chicago Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance within 30 days. The part that hit me was how many people just let it go because they don't know the law is on their side here. Has anyone actually filed with the city over a deposit and gotten results?

Man, that certified letter move is the whole game and most people don't know it. I went through this with a landlord on Troy St who tried to keep my $1200, and once I sent that letter citing the ordinance he folded in two weeks and mailed a check. Skip the city if you can, the letter alone usually scares them straight because they know the penalty is two times the deposit plus court costs.
