Should tenants have to pay for a lawyer when LL wins in eviction court? Hit 30 days of back rent
My landlord took me to court over $2,400 in back rent, I lost after 30 days of missed payments, and now they want me to cover their $500 attorney fee too, but Chicago's ordinance caps that at $250 so which side is actually fair here and has anyone else fought that charge?

Man come on, $500 in attorney fees when you already owe $2,400? That's the least of your problems here. The real issue is you got evicted and now you're sweating a few hundred bucks. Chicago capped it at $250 for a reason, so yeah they can only get that much from you, but that doesn't mean the fee itself is unfair. You didn't pay rent for 30 days, they had to hire a lawyer and take time off to go to court, so why shouldn't you cover some of that cost? It's not like they wanted to spend their day in eviction court either. Fighting the $250 charge seems like a waste of energy when you should be figuring out where your next place is gonna be.
