Honestly, my forge welds were a mess until I started using a proper flux

For months I was just using borax from the grocery store and getting cold shuts every time. Switched to a real blacksmithing flux last week and the first weld I tried on some 1080 just flowed together like butter. Anyone got a good source for it that doesn't cost a fortune?

Took a Marmot Trestles 15 out for a weekend in Yosemite and the temp dropped to 28. I was freezing all night, and the zipper snagged. Anyone have a solid 3-season bag rec that actually holds up?

Can we talk about switching from a standard boning knife to a 6-inch curved blade for breaking down hogs?

After switching tools for a month, my shoulder strain dropped by about half because the curve lets me follow the natural lines of the shoulder and ham without having to twist my wrist as much, has anyone else found a specific knife shape that cut down on fatigue?

Spent three hours trying to sync a new total station to our site tablet

The Trimble unit kept showing up on the network but the data collector app just wouldn't see it, even after the usual resets. I finally found a buried setting on the tablet to turn off a private Wi-Fi address feature that was blocking the connection. Has anyone else hit this specific snag with newer Android tablets on site?

I found out most coffee beans are actually seeds from a fruit

I was reading a book about coffee farming in Colombia and it mentioned that coffee 'beans' are really the pits of a cherry-like fruit. They have to remove the fruit pulp to get to the green seed inside. I always pictured them growing in pods like peanuts. Has anyone else had their basic coffee knowledge flipped like that?

Tried two different video formats on my channel last month and the results were wild

I posted a 15 minute deep dive on a news topic that took me a week to make. Then, three days later, I posted a 60 second clip of me reacting to the same topic with a shocked face. The short got 50 times more views in the first 24 hours. The algorithm clearly favors that quick, high-emotion format right now and pushes it way harder. Has anyone else seen their longer, detailed stuff just get buried no matter how good it is?

Tried using a regular handsaw versus a proper pruning saw on a big maple branch

The handsaw took forever and kept binding, but the pruning saw with its curved blade and aggressive teeth zipped right through in maybe two minutes. Anyone have a favorite brand for those curved saws?

I used to think the Andromeda galaxy was too faint for my gear

I mean, I have a basic DSLR and a kit lens, so I figured deep sky stuff was out. But then I saw a post from someone in Phoenix who got a clear shot of it with a 135mm lens and a 30 second exposure. I tried stacking 50 frames from my backyard last weekend and, idk, you can actually see the core and some dust lanes. Has anyone else been surprised by what you can pull out with just basic camera settings?

A guy at the Tucson hammer-in asked me why I was scared of the steel

Honestly, I was working on a leaf spring knife last year, just trying to get the shape right, and I was being super careful. This older smith, maybe in his 60s, watched me for a minute and just said, 'You're hitting it like you're scared of it. It's just steel. It won't bite unless you let it.' He took my hammer, showed me three solid, confident strikes, and the metal moved like butter. Tbh, I was overthinking the whole process, trying to be perfect on every hit instead of just committing. That five-minute talk changed how I work at the forge more than any video I've watched. Has anyone else had a moment where a simple piece of advice from another smith just clicked and fixed a bad habit?

I finally stopped using my old paper manuals after the shop laptop got a direct hit from a coolant leak in 2021.

I mean, I used to have a whole shelf of those Chilton books for every make, but now I just pull up the factory service info on my tablet, which is way faster to search, even if I miss the grease stains on the pages sometimes, you know?
