Debate: Do you baby your dredge or run it hard until something breaks?

Honestly I've been going back and forth on this with a guy I work with on the Mississippi. He swears by doing full teardowns every 200 hours and greasing every fitting twice a day. I'm more of a run it till it rattles then fix what broke kind of operator. Last month I pushed through a really rocky stretch without stopping to check the cutter head and ended up cracking a tooth on the starboard side. Cost me near $400 to replace it on a Saturday. But his way? He spent 3 days last week just on maintenance while I was pulling material. Which side do you lean on and why? Has anyone else dealt with a blowout from skipping too much maintenance?

Unpopular opinion: that 'less is more' skincare advice from my mentor was wrong for me

My old mentor at the Aveda Institute in Portland told me to strip my routine down to just cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. Said anything extra was just wasting money and irritating my skin. I followed that for about 6 months and my acne got worse and my texture was all over the place. Turns out my skin actually needs a gentle active like lactic acid a few times a week plus a niacinamide serum. I started adding those back in last fall and my skin cleared up in like 3 weeks. Anyone else had a skincare rule that just didn't work for your actual skin type?

Spent $80 on a 'pro grade' paint respirator that didn't fit under my hood

Bought that fancy 3M half mask with the pink cartridges, but it hits the brim of my welding hood every time I tilt my head down. Had to switch back to the $12 basic model after one afternoon of fighting with it. Anyone else run into gear that looks good on paper but sucks on the job?

Walked through that NXIVM building in Albany last month and it gave me the creeps

I was up in Albany for a family thing and decided to drive past the old NXIVM headquarters on Willett Street since I'd seen the documentaries. The place is just a regular looking brick building now, totally empty, but there were still these weird symbols carved into the concrete out front. My buddy who lives nearby said people still drive by to take pictures like it's a tourist spot. Has anyone else visited an old cult property and felt weird about the energy there?

Warning: Bought a laser level that was way off from the factory

Checked it against my old string line on a 40 foot run in Seattle and it was off by almost an inch. Has anyone else had issues with cheap laser levels drifting right out of the box?

Tried using a bone folder on a leather project and ruined the grain

I had this nice piece of goat leather for a journal cover last Saturday and figured I'd use my bone folder to crease the spine like I do with paper. Within two passes the grain started showing these weird shiny spots that looked like I'd pressed too hard. Turns out bone folders can actually burnish leather if you apply even moderate pressure, which is fine for paper but not for soft leathers. Anyone else learned this the hard way or am I the only one who skipped that chapter?

Spent 3 days debugging a viral video that was just a broken recommendation loop

I run a small niche channel about restoring old hand tools. Last month one of my videos randomly blew up to 200k views overnight. I spent the next 3 days trying to figure out what I did right so I could replicate it. I checked tags, thumbnails, description keywords, posting time, everything. Finally I noticed the video was getting most views from a suggested video that was itself going viral about a completely different topic. The algorithm just paired them together by accident. My video wasn't actually performing well on its own at all. Has anyone else had a phantom viral hit that turned out to be just a weird algorithm glitch?

Switched to a Soot Eater after 12 years of using a wire brush

I always thought those flexible chimney whips were a gimmick. Stuck with my old wire brush and rods for over a decade, even after my buddy at the supply house in Columbus kept pushing the Soot Eater. Finally tried one on a nasty creosote buildup last Tuesday. That thing knocked off 3 times more soot in half the time. Has anyone else switched from traditional brushes and never looked back?

I spotted my first deep fake at a family reunion in Ohio

My cousin showed me a video of our uncle saying he was selling the family farm. Something felt off about the way his mouth moved, so I paused it and looked at the shadows under his chin. The lighting didn't match the sun position in the background, and the audio had a weird hollow echo. I pointed it out to everyone and we realized it was a fake meant to stir up drama. Has anyone else caught a deep fake in a personal setting like that?

Saw a guy in Kansas City run a brisket flat through a meat slicer

I always thought slicing brisket by hand was the ONLY way to do it right. Watched this pitmaster at Slap's BBQ in KC run a whole flat through an electric deli slicer last weekend. It came out PERFECTLY uniform, like 1/8 inch slices every time. He said it keeps the meat from shredding apart when you're doing a big catering order. Has anyone else tried this or am I crazy for thinking it might work?
