TIL my landlord can just keep my $1,450 deposit for 'paint touch ups' and call it normal wear
Moved out of my place in Logan Square after 2 years, left it spotless, even patched the nail holes myself. Got a letter last week saying they're keeping the full $1,450 because of 'excessive wall scuffing' from my couch. I called the management office to ask what counts as normal wear in Illinois and the guy literally laughed and said 'that's for a judge to decide.' Turns out Chicago has a law about this but nobody tells renters until it's too late. Has anyone actually gotten a deposit back after fighting it, or do I need to just eat this one?
