Tried the plastic sheet trick on a nasty flue last Tuesday and made a bigger mess
I taped plastic over the fireplace opening like a guy at the supply house in Dayton told me, thinking it would stop the soot from blowing into the living room. Instead the tape let go halfway through and I dumped about 2 pounds of creosote crumbs right onto the lady's white carpet. Does anyone here actually make that trick work, or should I just go back to my drop cloth and stop trying to be clever?
Did the supply house guy tell you to use regular painters tape or the good stuff? Because that's where most guys mess up, cheap tape pops as soon as the heat hits the plastic and then you're wearing the soot. If you tape the poly down with actual foil tape around the whole edge and leave a slit at the bottom for a shop vac hose, it holds fine and most of the junk drops straight down instead of onto her carpet.
