Everyone is dunking on that viral 'study says chocolate helps you lose weight' headline but the real problem is nobody checked what the study actually measured
I keep seeing people in this community call that chocolate headline a flat out lie, and honestly I think that is the easy take. I pulled up the actual paper from the journal last week and the thing they measured was not weight at all, it was self reported mood scores over 14 days with 23 participants who got a free bar every day. The headline said 'chocolate melts belly fat' but the word fat never shows up once in the methods section. What bugs me is that people here are calling it a lie when it is actually something worse, it is a headline that takes a real study and swaps the outcome for a totally different one. If we just yell 'lie' every time, we never talk about how the numbers were tiny and the effect was basically noise. I spent two evenings reading the whole thing on my phone at the kitchen table and wrote out every claim in the article next to what the study did, and 6 out of 7 claims had no match at all. So my question for you all is this, how do you decide where the line sits between stretching a real finding and just making up a new one, because I think we are lumping very different types of bad into one bucket here.
