That $15 grounding rod tester paid for itself in an afternoon
I was hooking up a new outlet in my garage and my old meter kept reading all over the place. Buddy told me to grab a proper grounding rod tester instead of guessing. Spent $15 at a local electrical supply shop in Tulsa and found out my ground rod was barely buried. Fixed it in 20 minutes. Has anyone else had cheap testers lie to them or was mine just old and worn out?

Are you sure it was the tester that found the bad ground rod and not just the outlet wiring being loose? In my experience those cheap testers will read fine one minute and garbage the next, mostly because the leads get bent up or the battery starts dying. I've got a $12 one that lied to me for weeks until I swapped the battery and it started reading right. Your old meter might have just had a bad connection at the probe, not a worn out circuit board.
