Chose the solar battery over the generator, regretting it on day 3

I finally pulled the trigger on a 5kW battery setup instead of buying a $1,200 propane generator, mostly because the rebate made it only $800 out of pocket here in Phoenix. Installation took 2 days and the electrician kept saying 'this should work fine.' Then we had that 110-degree week and our AC tripped the inverter twice, so now I'm running fans and ice packs like it's 1995. Has anyone else made the leap to battery backup and found it's just not enough for summer cooling, or did I get a bad unit?
