I finally stopped using the same old feed rate for everything
An older guy at my shop, Dave, saw me running a job and said my finish was chattery. He asked what my feed was, and I told him 80 ipm like I always do. He said, 'Kid, that bit is burning up. You gotta match the feed to the tool and the material, not just pick a number.' I looked it up in the tooling catalog and dropped it to 65 ipm for that specific aluminum alloy. The cut is way smoother now and the tool lasts longer. How do you guys figure out your starting feed rates for new materials?

Tooling catalog" reminds me of the time I tried to cut steel with a wood router bit.

That sound still haunts me. Sparks flying everywhere, the smell of burnt metal. Completely ruined the bit and scared myself half to death. Learned real quick that tools have very specific jobs. Now I double check everything before I plug it in.
