Ran the same facing pass for 3 years before a chip told me my setup was off
Kept blaming the inserts for that rough finish on 6061 until my probe read .003 out of square on the vise last Tuesday. Any of you running a torque wrench on your vise bolts or am I just chasing ghosts at this point?
Three years of cussing at inserts when it was your vise the whole time, that's a special kind of pain right there. Honestly torque wrenches on vise bolts are cheap insurance, and a lot of guys skip it because they assume hand tight is close enough. It isn't close enough, .003 doesn't sound like much until you watch your finish go to hell because of it. I'd say grab a beam-style wrench and check the spec on your jaws, takes two minutes and saves you three years next time. Chasing ghosts is when you keep swapping inserts and hoping, checking the vise is just good sense.
Chasing ghosts is when you keep swapping inserts and hoping" hits home way too hard, I've got a drawer full of perfectly good inserts that did nothing wrong. Beam wrench is on the list now, right next to my pride.
