Why does nobody talk about how pour overs got fancy

I started doing pour overs back in 2011 at a shop in Portland. We used a basic kettle and a plastic V60, no scale even. Now I see people with $200 gooseneck setups and they still stall the brew because they obsess over the bloom. The water temp matters way more than the gear, I've proven that with a $15 thermometer and my old kettle. Anyone else think the ritual took over the actual taste?

Is it really a pour over ritual if you haven't sacrificed at least one expensive kettle to the coffee gods? That's the real test, not the taste. I mean, we all started with a cracked plastic dripper and a prayer, and somehow those cups were just as good. Now people act like the gear is the whole point, when it's really just a very pretty way to make the same mistakes. Maybe the $300 setup is just a fancy way to burn your hand and call it a hobby.

Honestly my buddy spent 300 bucks on a fancy setup and still uses tap water that tastes like a pool. The kettle does nothing if you skip the simple stuff, and I've had better cups from a $20 plastic dripper at a gas station.
