Hot take: I picked a new reader over a longtime fan for my comic book club
Went with my friend who just finished Saga over the guy who's read everything since 1992, and the fresh questions sparked our best talk in years. Anyone else find new perspectives more valuable than deep knowledge sometimes?

Totally get that, and @singh.harper nailed it about longtime fans. My buddy who only reads manga asked about my X-Men books and his "why do they fight in spandex" question made me rethink the whole thing.

But what if the real problem is we make longtime fans feel like they have to be encyclopedias instead of people? Like @singh.harper said, they just end up listing facts. Maybe we don't ask them the right questions either. A new reader gets to just feel things, but an old fan gets quizzed on trivia. No wonder the talks get stale.

Yeah that "fresh questions" thing is so real. I'm the longtime fan in most of my friend groups, and let me tell you, we can be the most boring people to talk to. We just nod and say "yep, that's a callback to issue #47" instead of actually having a feeling about it.
