PSA: I thought the guy at my shop who reads comics in order was full of it

He handed me a reading list when I started at the shop in Fresno and I laughed it off for weeks until I tried it and actually followed the story. Now I'm 6 trades deep and need to know, do you read story arcs in order or just jump around?
