A 30-year diver named Pete in Morgan City made me rethink my hat checks

Had a chat with a guy named Pete who's been diving 30 years out of Morgan City, and he asked me how many times I check my hat seal before a splash. I said twice. He said he does it 5 times and has never had a flooded helmet in 12 years. That got me thinking about my routine, so I've been double checking the neck ring at 3 points now before every dive, and last week I caught a worn O-ring on the third check that I would have missed before.
