Saw a guy using a Kirby Morgan 57 in 40 feet of viz last week

I was doing a job off the coast of Galveston last Thursday and this diver shows up with a full Kirby Morgan setup for a 20 foot silt out inspection. Everyone was telling him how smart he was for having the best gear but I think it's overkill for bottom visibility under 3 feet. He spent more time messing with his comms than actually working. Am I wrong for thinking a regular band mask would have been fine there?

A regular band mask would've been just fine in that kind of water. Honestly, some guys just buy top of the line gear to show off, not because they actually need it. He was probably more worried about looking good than getting the job done quick. Seen it happen plenty of times where the fancy stuff just gets in the way when you're working in tight, low viz spots like that.

Maybe it's not about looking good but about having a backup plan if conditions suddenly change. idk, sometimes that extra visibility could mean spotting a hazard way before it becomes a problem.

Right, and that backup plan thing is exactly what people overlook. I'll take what @holly709 said about fancy gear getting in the way, but there's a difference between buying blind and adapting gear to conditions. I've seen guys run a shorty wetsuit with a high-viz hood in murky water, and they were the ones calling out the submerged logs and loose cables way before anyone else saw them. It's not about the hype brand of your mask, it's about fitting the tool to the risk. Sometimes that extra second of spotting something bad is worth dealing with a bulkier setup.
