Vent: kid on the dock said 'why learn tables when the computer does it', and I've been chewing on that all week
He watched me burn 20 minutes on a 3 m spur at the dock in Astoria flipping through the manual he never opened, and all I could think was how every old diver I know carries a rope signal chart in their head instead of their phone, so has anyone else run into this with new hires?
used to roll my eyes at the old guys memorizing tables too, figured it was just stubbornness. then one shift my phone died mid job and I had to do a decompression stop off memory, and let me tell you, that panic taught me fast why the basics matter. it's not about the computer failing, it's about what happens to your brain when it does.
