Unpopular opinion: I used to think thermal paste was overhyped

For years I just used whatever came pre-applied on coolers and called it a day. Then I had a client in Phoenix with a Ryzen 5 that kept hitting 95C under load. Swapped to a $8 tube of Arctic MX-6 and re-seated his cooler right. Temps dropped 12 degrees after 2 days. Now I carry extra paste in my bag for every build. Has anyone else had a cheap upgrade fix a weird overheating issue?

Blew my buddy's mind when he had the SAME problem with his old i7 build. He was convinced he needed a whole new cooler or even a new CPU because it was hitting 90C+ while just playing Valorant. I told him to just take off the cooler, clean everything with alcohol wipes, and put on a fresh pea-sized drop of some Noctua paste I had. After a couple days of use, his max temps dropped like 15 degrees and he texted me a screenshot of it idling at 32C. He still talks about it like it was a miracle.

But isn't Ryzen just known for running hot anyway?

Arctic MX-6 fixed my own build too, cheap fix that works.
