Update: I skipped the thermal paste swap on a 6 year old Dell and now I feel like an idiot
Client brought in a Latitude that was hitting 95C under any load and I was sure it was just a clogged fan, so I blew it out and sent it back without touching the paste. He came back 9 days later with the same complaint and this time I pulled the heatsink, and that factory paste was straight up chalk. Now I'm second guessing how many "fixed" tickets I closed in 2023 without ever checking the paste, so what's your cutoff, do you repaste on every deep clean or only when temps look bad?

Oof, been there. Anything past 4 years gets a repaste from me, no questions asked. Paste is cheap, comebacks are not.
