My lead finisher Vince told me to stop floating so early, and a 400 sq ft slab in Bakersfield finally taught me what he meant
I've been finishing for 6 years and always hopped on the float the second the bleed water disappeared. Vince is 58 and has been pouring since he was 19, and last month he watched me rush a 400 sq ft driveway slab in Bakersfield and just shook his head. He said the cream was still spongy underneath even though it looked ready on top, and that's why my edges kept ripping when I ran the trowel. We waited about 25 extra minutes on the next pour and the finish came out glassy with zero hand work. I always trusted my eyes over the clock, but now I'm doing the boot test and watching the sheen instead. So what's your go to sign that a slab is finally ready to float, or do you just go by feel?
