Dropped $300 on a 'ultra rare' coin from a late night auction...
Seller swore it was a mint error from 1955 and I bought the whole story hook line and sinker. Turns out it was a common fake and now I'm stuck with a lump of metal that looks good on a shelf but has zero resale value... anyone else get burned by auction fever?

The same thing happened to me a few years back with a "rare" silver dollar I picked up at a local show. What worked for me was turning it into a learning experience instead of just staring at it. I took it to a real coin shop and had them verify it was fake, then kept it on my desk as a reminder to always check before buying. Also started asking for certification numbers and doing quick searches on my phone before I hand over cash. That one mistake saved me from making bigger ones down the road, and I actually talk to other collectors about it now when I see them getting too excited. Sometimes the best thing you can do is use that lump of metal as a lesson and move forward.
