Overheard a structural engineer say 'foundations are just suggestions' and now I'm rethinking everything

Was on a job last week downtown and this old engineer was looking at a cracked slab on a 1970s house. He told the homeowner that building codes back then were more like guidelines and most foundations just did what they wanted over time. Honestly, it got me thinking about how many conspiracies about shoddy construction might actually have some truth to them. Ngl, I always rolled my eyes at the whole 'they don't build em like they used to' thing, but hearing a pro admit that some houses are held together by luck hit different. Anyone else ever get a reality check from an actual expert that made you question a conspiracy?

Is a cracked slab really a conspiracy though, or just old concrete doing what concrete does?

Man that's the kind of talk that sticks with you.

Wait, didn't your buddy say something similar to you once too? I had a coworker tell me "you'll never get that time back" when I was stressing over some dumb project, and I still hear it in his voice lol. It's wild how those little throwaway lines just live in your brain forever.
