Serious question, did the 'Birds Aren't Real' thing start as a joke or a real op?

A guy in a drone costume at a Memphis park told me in 2019 that the whole movement was a psyop to make people distrust real birds, and now I can't tell if the 15 people I saw wearing the shirts that day were in on it or just there for the bit.
