Found out a 30 story crane can cost $60k a month to rent and now the numbers on my bid make sense
I was messing around on a rental site during lunch and saw that a big tower crane runs about $60k a month just for the rental, not counting the crew or the setup. That hit me because our PM keeps telling us why we can't afford one on this 8 story job in Bakersfield. We've been doing everything with a boom lift and it's slowing us down bad. Anyone here ever run the math on when a crane actually pays for itself over renting lifts for a whole job?
Ran a 5 story job last year where we compared the two options before we even broke ground. The math only works if you're moving heavy stuff daily and the schedule is tight. On your 8 story job you might hit that point if the lift work is really the bottleneck. But 60k a month adds up fast and that's before mob, setup, and the operator. For a lot of jobs the lift ends up cheaper even when it feels slower. PMs aren't always wrong about this one.
