Tried a new toner on a client and her hair turned green instead of purple

I've been doing hair for 15 years and thought I'd seen it all, but last week I used a new purple toner on this lady who had really porous highlights from all the box dye she used. It turned a straight up swampy green within minutes, not even a hint of purple. I had to use a color remover and start over, which took almost 2 hours. Has anyone else run into porous hair reacting weird with certain toners?

Oh man, I had almost the exact same thing happen with a client last month. Her highlights were super porous from years of at-home stuff and that purple toner turned into a weird mossy green mess, totally ruined my whole afternoon.

@williamw75 was probably just using old toner or bad water honestly.

You think the porosity was the issue, @barbara_jenkins66? I've seen porous hair take purple just fine, it might have been the specific pigment load in that toner clashing with leftover yellow tones.
