Vent: wasted 2 hours on a color correction before realizing my developer was off
So last Tuesday I had a client come in at 9am with box dye dark brown she wanted lifted to a level 8 ash blonde, and I mixed what I thought was 30 volume developer with the lightener like I always do. I kept checking the bowl every 10 minutes and it was lifting so slow, barely a level, and I was going to blame her hair history. Around the 40 minute mark I grabbed the bottle to check the lot number and that is when I saw it, the cap had a tiny crack and the developer had been slowly losing strength in my cabinet for who knows how long. I ran to my back room and tested a fresh bottle on a strand and it lifted 3 levels in 20 minutes flat. I felt so dumb because I had been telling this poor woman her box dye was the problem when really my product shelf was the problem. I ended up redoing the whole thing with the fresh developer and got her to a level 8 but she lost an extra hour and a half of her day. Has anyone else had a cracked cap or old stock sabotage a service without you catching it right away?
